What Are the telc A1 and A2 Exams?

The telc exams (The European Language Certificates) are standardized German as a foreign language exams. They are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and assess language skills from A1 to C2.

The telc A1 Exam or Start Deutsch A1 – German for Beginners

The telc German A1 exam is designed for learners who have acquired basic knowledge of the German language – usually after around 120 lessons or equivalent self-study.
At A1 level, you can:

  • Ask and answer simple questions
  • Introduce yourself
  • Have short everyday conversations
  • Ask for directions
  • Go shopping or order food
  • Understand numbers, times, and personal information

The focus is on simple everyday communication – not perfect grammar.
The A1 certificate is often required for spouse reunification in Germany and is frequently part of the visa process.

The telc A2 Exam or Start Deutsch A2 – Basic German Skills

The telc German A2 exam is intended for learners with basic German language skills, usually after around 240 lessons. With A2 level, you can:

  • Hold simple conversations more confidently
  • Talk about family, work, and everyday life
  • Understand short texts
  • Write simple messages
  • Communicate in typical daily situations

At this level as well, successful communication is the main priority. The A2 certificate can be important for:

  • Extending a residence permit
  • Integration courses
  • Applications and employment in Germany
  • Advanced language courses

How Are the telc A1 and A2 Exams Structured?

The telc German A1 and A2 exams consist of:

  • A written exam
  • An oral exam

Written Exam

The written section tests:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

You will listen to short conversations and announcements, read simple texts, and write short messages or emails.

Oral Exam

The oral exam usually takes place in pairs. Here, you demonstrate that you can communicate in German in everyday situations.
